Dark Side of Arnold Schwarzenegger’s Bodybuilding Legacy: Controversies and Allegations

By John Gonzalez 10/11/2025

Arnold Schwarzenegger’s reputation as the ‘Austrian Oak’ and bodybuilding titan has long been cemented in history, but a recent Instagram video (courtesy of @bodybuilder.plus) shines a spotlight on the less glamorous chapters of his ascent. This exposé alleges a series of controversial maneuvers that question the fairness and integrity of Schwarzenegger’s Mr. Olympia wins in the early 1970s.

The claims include accusations of rule-breaking, competitor sabotage, and manipulation behind the scenes, suggesting that Schwarzenegger’s path to glory was not entirely earned on the stage alone.

Here’s a breakdown of the major Instagram allegations with explanations:

Beyond these controversies, Schwarzenegger remains an undeniable figure of strength and ambition, transitioning from Mr. Olympia to Hollywood legend and then governor of California.

At 78, the Terminator star’s approach to fitness has evolved dramatically. From grueling, long-hour sessions to efficient, joint-conscious workouts, Schwarzenegger now focuses on longevity and health.

Arnold Schwarzenegger Statement on Steroids, Bodybuilding Advice and Health Warnings

Arnold Schwarzenegger’s steroid confession offers a rare glimpse into the once-hidden realm of performance enhancement in bodybuilding. In his July/August 2023 Men’s Health interview, he admitted to using Dianabol and testosterone under strict medical supervision but drew a clear line between his era and the rampant abuse today.

“One hundred milligrams a week,” he said about his testosterone use, “and then three Dianabol a day, so that was 15 milligrams a day.” Schwarzenegger’s tone was cautionary:

Bodybuilding always, always was considered a safe sport. But now it’s not. Now people are dying — they’re dying because of overdoses of drugs and they don’t know what the f— they’re doing.

He slammed the so-called “charlatans” who feed misinformation and urged young bodybuilders to seek legitimate medical advice rather than quick fixes. Despite acknowledging his own steroid use, Schwarzenegger implores today’s athletes to steer clear of steroids altogether. “Don’t go there,” he said.

Anytime you abuse the body, you’re going to regret it. So I just want young people to know that I have seen people getting kidney transplants and suffering tremendously from it.

His warning is heavy with personal experience and concern for the future of bodybuilding.

Arnold Schwarzenegger at 78: Daily Workouts with New Fitness Routine

Though the man who conquered the Mr. Olympia stage and Hollywood’s biggest action roles is well into his late seventies, Arnold Schwarzenegger’s dedication to fitness remains unwavering, albeit transformed. Instead of the marathon five-hour gym sessions that once defined his training, he now limits his workouts to about 90 minutes daily.

“I sometimes trained five hours a day with weights. That’s a lot of stress on the body — and clearly the body was not meant to do all that,” he recently told Business Insider. Over the decades, the physical toll of intense lifting required a change. His workouts now blend smarter, shorter sessions with exercise machines designed to reduce joint stress, a far cry from the 80 to 100 sets he once pushed through.

Yet, Schwarzenegger remains a staunch advocate for foundational strength training, emphasizing the importance of mastering free weights such as barbells, dumbbells, and kettlebells before shifting to machines.

The basic exercises are the most underrated exercises. Technique builds strength; routine keeps it.

His current regimen includes 25 sets of weightlifting exercises combined with biking for cardio, proving that movement truly is life. Even on days when life throws a curveball,  like a flat tire disrupting his routine, Schwarzenegger adapts, balancing biking and walking. His message to fitness enthusiasts is clear: maintain consistency, respect your body’s limits, and never let pain halt your movement.

At 78, Schwarzenegger’s adjusted fitness routine shows wisdom earned through decades of experience, a testament to the harsh lessons hidden behind the muscle-bound façade. Are today’s bodybuilders learning from Schwarzenegger’s tale? Dive into the comments below and share your thoughts.
