Cyberpunk 2077 Sequel: Keanu Reeves Wants to Return as Johnny Silverhand

Keanu Reeves has entertained the prospect of returning as Johnny Silverhand in the Cyberpunk 2077 sequel. Having been one of the major draws for the CD Projekt title, which redeemed itself after a disastrous launch that prompted PlayStation to issue refunds, the actor, during the promotion for Good Fortune, stressed he’d love to reprise the role (via IGN).

Absolutely. I’d love to play Johnny Silverhand again

Although all loose ends were tied for Reeves’ Silverhand, depending on the end ing that is made canon, it’s safe to say CD Projekt will bring him back due to Reeves’ star power alone. That said, the sequel still seems a long way off.

Don’t Expect Cyberpunk 2 Anytime Soon

While a sequel to Cyberpunk, previously referred to as Project Orion, has entered pre-production, CD Projekt revealed that the sequel, titled Cyberpunk 2, is still years away.

Most of CD Projekt’s developers remain involved in the highly anticipated The Witcher 4. Back in May, it was revealed that out of the studio’s 730-member crew, 96 were actively involved with the sequel. In their statement, CD Projekt added:

Several weeks ago the CD Projekt Red team responsible for the next big game set in the Cyberpunk universe completed the project’s conceptual phase. As a result, Cyberpunk 2 – previously known under the codename Project Orion – has progressed to pre-production

During the following investor call, co-CEO Michał Nowakowski suggested that the sequel might not hit shelves until late 2030 or early 2031.

I can reiterate in a way what I said in one of the previous calls, which was basically that our journey from pre-production to final release takes four to five years on average.

To be fair, even that date could be pushed back, given how bloated and unpredictable modern game development pipelines have become. And given CD Projekt’s own history with troublesome launches, it won’t be surprising if they push the potential release window to ensure a smoother launch.

Keanu Reeves on Why He was Drawn to the Role of Johnny Silverhand

Reeve has been a fan-favorite among the Cyberpunk community since his association with the title was announced. As for his reasoning behind pursuing the project, in addition to his fascination with sci-fi, it was the role-playing factor that drew him into the game.

Considering Silverhand’s relationship with V can differ from player to player, depending on their playthroughs, the John Wick star was thrilled to play different versions of Johnny, something that remains rare in his onscreen works (via Los Angeles Times).

It’s an open-world, role-playing game. What decisions you make for your dialogue and how you want to be, gives Johnny Silverhand not just one role. I’m playing different versions of the character. That’s something I normally don’t get to do when I inhabit a character.

With no release date for The Witcher 4 in sight, it’ll be a long wait before Reeves gets to return in the role of Johnny Silverhand.
