In a recent interview with Variety, Academy Award winner Cillian Murphy was asked about his involvement in the upcoming film 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple. This will be the star’s return to the franchise after being part of the original cult-classic 28 Days Later, which gave rise to the $297 million franchise (via The Numbers). He said:
But I will say that I think Nia DaCosta has made an extraordinary film, and it’s an amazing accompaniment to Danny’s movie. I’m only in it a tiny bit, but I’m really proud of it.
Despite not being part of the recent film in the franchise, titled 28 Years Later, Murphy’s return to the franchise he helped create has already started making buzz in the fandom. We have also discussed why the star was missing from the latest installment in the series.
What Can Be Expected From 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple?
Although Murphy may have already confirmed his involvement in the upcoming film, 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple, it is still in its earliest stages of development. So far, we know that Nia DaCosta will be the one directing the film, while the original film’s Danny Boyle and Alex Garland will be producing it.
At the same time, we also have confirmation that stars from the recent 28 Years Later, like Ralph Finneas and Aaron-Taylor Johnson, will be reprising their roles in the sequel (via Entertainment Weekly). In fact, Finneas’ role as Dr. Ian Kelson will be the highlight of the film, as indicated by its title.
As for the story, we can expect further exploration of the infected, where we might find their true nature, and where more moral ambiguity might be introduced. Along with that, cults, mythology, human violence, redemption, and human nature are expected to be focused on more heavily (via Rolling Stone).
Danny Boyle Reveals Why Cillian Murphy Wasn’t Part of 28 Years Later
While Danny Boyle was the director of the original film, as well as the recently released sequel, the absence of Murphy in the movie was a big letdown for fans of the cult-classic. Thankfully, the filmmaker had the answers to these questions ready to be given to the fandom.
In an interview with ScreenRant, Boyle talked about how, despite the absence of Murphy’s character Jim, the world is still connected to the original apocalypse from the first film. At that time, Boyle wasn’t supposed to talk about what happened to Jim, which might’ve been the plan all along, to save his appearance in the upcoming film. He said:
So, it’s independent from the first film, but it’s still the same apocalypse 28 years later as it was for Cillian Murphy in the first film and Naomie Harris. But this is 28 years later, and we don’t know what’s happened to them [Jim and Selena]. I’m not allowed to tell you, but these two are more than worthy stand-ins.
While we may not know to which capacity the star will be playing the role of Jim in the film, fans seem content to know that they’ll finally see the return of Murphy in the series. Here’s more information about 28 Days Later in tabular format.
