Bayley’s Mexican Roots: Stephanie Vaquer’s 1st Latina WWE Women’s Champion Claim Explained

By Steven Williams 10/09/2025

“Is Bayley Mexican?” A question that has been asked for quite some time by the WWE Universe. During a quick interview with Jazzys World TV, The Role Model discussed her Mexican background, stating that her love for wrestling stems from her grandmother, who used to watch a lot of Lucha Libre, and how her dad shared the same love, which got her into wrestling. She said,

I first got into wrestling with my grandma, who was, you know, where my Mexican background comes from. She watched a lot of Lucha Libre growing up, and then she got my dad into it, and my dad was the one who got us into wrestling, so to me, that’s where I take most pride in, you know.

She explained how fans are unaware of her Hispanic heritage, and it has often caught them off guard as they learn about her ethnicity. Bayley has been a prominent addition to WWE and has been one of the most decorated superstars and has been part of some intriguing storylines that have elevated her.

Explaining Stephanie Vaquer’s First Latina WWE Women’s World Champion Claim

Just like Bayley, another WWE Superstar had taken the female locker room by storm. Stephanie Vaquer made her debut in the main roster in June 2025, where she earned her shot at the Women’s World Championship. However, her opportunity was postponed due to Naomi’s pregnancy announcement. After a roadblock, she not only faced Iyo Sky at Wrestlepalooza

but also won the title.

During an exclusive interview with PWInsider.com, La Primera shared how she created history in WWE by becoming the first Latina to win the Women’s World Championship and how people have second-guessed her when she talked about her dreams. She said,

Yeah, I’m the first Latina and WWE Women’s World Champion, and I’m so proud. Many people told me, ‘You can’t because you’re a woman. You can’t because you don’t speak English. You can’t because you don’t know WWE.’ Many reasons. But now I say: Nothing is impossible. Nothing. Nothing.

The comments spread like wildfire and rubbed Bayley’s fans the wrong way, who took to X, sharing a picture of The Hugger with a Mexican flag, captioned, “The disrespect to Bayley Martinez.” Check out the tweet below:

I think she's talking about the Women's World Championship itself. Prior to her it was just Rhea, Becky, Liv, Iyo, and Naomi.

It's confusing because it shares a lineage with the SD belt, but based on the wording, I think that's what Vaquer meant.

However, another fan clarified that Vaquer might not be wrong because she mentioned being the WWE Women’s World Champion. Since the introduction of the new belt after the WWE 2023 draft, numerous talented performers like Becky Lynch, Iyo Sky, Rhea Ripley, Liv Morgan, and more have won, but not Bayley or any other Latina superstar. Hence, making Vaquer true to her words.

Is WWE Going to Feature Bayley and Lyra Valkyria in a Feud?

After Bayley’s good intentions cost Lyra Valkyria the Women’s IC Championship at SummerSlam 2025, she decided to take some time off from the action. However, she kept the fans and Valkyria on their toes with prerecorded promo videos talking about the voices inside her head and how she wanted to make things right with The Bird Woman.

However, she returned to help Valkyria during a RAW segment, taking down The Judgment Day, Raquel Rodriguez, and Roxanne Perez, as they unleashed a vicious attack on her. After saving the day, she went to hug everyone around the ringside and left. Later that night, the former Women’s IC Champion went to express her gratitude, but she could be heard loudly arguing with someone, but upon entering the room, she was alone. Here’s what followed during their conversation:

Is this the same Bayley that was hugging everybody earlier? 👀 pic.twitter.com/q8XveGDe9v

Since then, the two have been having each other’s backs, but something feels off, as The Role Model tends to show a slightly darker shade of her personality each week. This makes us wonder if WWE is trying to give Bayley a split personality, which will ultimately result in a feud with Valkyria, as she is torn apart by her two personalities.

Do you think Bayley’s split character is going to pay off among the fans? Or it would lead to an awkward storyline that fans will not care enough about. Let us know in the comments below!
