Andrew Garfield has finally given a clear answer on The Amazing Spider-Man 3. After his surprise return in Spider-Man: No Way Home in 2021, fans have been begging Sony to bring back his version of the web-slinger, especially since he’s the only Spider-Man actor who didn’t get a threequel opportunity.
So, ever since Garfield reprised his role in the MCU, rumors about a third movie have been everywhere. But the actor has now set the record straight. In a new interview with GQ, the Oscar-nominated star confirmed that The Amazing Spider-Man 3 is not happening. He added that he doesn’t think it ever will.
It’s not happening and I don’t believe it ever will, but sweet of you to want it to happen.
Meanwhile, the third Amazing Spider-Man installment was originally slated for June 10, 2016, while another sequel was planned for May 4, 2018. Director Marc Webb was also associated with the project after helming the first two installments. But sadly, it now seems that Andrew Garfield’s third outing will never see the light of day.
What Andrew Garfield Has Said About Avengers: Secret Wars?
Now, turns out, The Amazing Spider-Man 3 update isn’t the only thing Andrew Garfield recently talked about. He also shared his thoughts on possibly returning in Avengers: Secret Wars
To which, the actor didn’t give a straight answer, but his playful tone got everyone talking. He joked, “See, what it is, is this a tell? You’ll find out!” Fans instantly took that as a hint that he might be back. After all, his cheeky denials before No Way Home turned into one of the biggest surprises in Marvel history.
See, what it is, is this a tell? Or what is it? You’ll find out! Whatever response I’m having, is it exasperation? Is it? I don’t know. You’ll find out.
So far, whether he’s being honest this time or keeping another secret, no one knows for sure. But with Marvel teasing a massive crossover in Secret Wars that includes heroes from the X-Men and Avengers, people are hoping to see all three Spider-Men, Tom Holland, Tobey Maguire, and Andrew Garfield, share the screen again.
Do We Need The Amazing Spider-Man 3 With Andrew Garfield?
Meanwhile, considering how Andrew Garfield’s sad update on The Amazing Spider-Man 3 has left fans hopeless, let’s figure out whether we truly need the third installment of his Sony flick.
Well, honestly, it might be time to admit that The Amazing Spider-Man 3 doesn’t need to happen anymore. After all, Sony has clearly moved on, focusing on Tom Holland’s Spider-Man story in the MCU. Those movies have been hugely successful and show a younger version of the hero that fits perfectly with the timeline.
Even Andrew Garfield himself has moved on to other projects. In recent years, he has delivered stunning performances in films like Tick, Tick… Boom!, We Live in Time, and even his TV show like Under the Banner of Heaven. The star has clearly shown that he has grown far beyond the superhero phase, and he seems content.
So, bringing him back just for nostalgia might not serve the story well, especially when the MCU already has a strong version of the character with Holland. Also, let’s face it, Spider-Man is supposed to be a young, coming-of-age hero, balancing school, life, and crime-fighting. And Garfield, although it looks great, has long passed that phase of Peter Parker’s life.
Therefore, instead of forcing a third movie just for the sake of fan service, maybe it’s better to let his Spider-Man legacy stay special. No Way Home gave his character redemption, and perhaps that’s the perfect ending fans were always waiting for.
