Afterburn Trailer: Dave Bautista’s Post-Apocalyptic Thriller Proves Gears of War Can Still Happen

The trailer for Afterburn (2025), a post-apocalyptic action film starring Dave Bautista has been released online. According to Movie Insider, based on the comic book series of the same name, the film is set in a world destroyed by a massive solar flare, where treasure hunters search for lost artifacts like the Mona Lisa and the Crown Jewels.

Meanwhile, Dave Bautista plays the lead, fighting off rival hunters, pirates, and dangerous mutants. Now, the trailer featured him in a high-octane action sequence, taking down multiple enemies at once. Followed by explosive car chases, intense gunfights, and an appearance from Samuel L. Jackson.

Well, among all, the particular fight scene in a post-apocalyptic world right away sparked online discussions surrounding the popular video game Gears of War. Considering how both feature a tough ex-soldier in a ruined world, battling foes, it sparked conversations surrounding the possibility of a Gears of War movie.

Especially since Dave Bautista has been fighting to adapt the game, now seems the right time. Because if Afterburn can be made and attract buzz, so can a Gears of War movie.

Dave Bautista Urges Fans to Pressurize Netflix on Gears of War Movie

So far, Dave Bautista has made it very clear that he wants to star in the Gears of War

movie, as the titular character, Marcus Fenix. Since Netflix has long been in the limbo of creating a Gears of War adaptation with writer Jon Spaihts tapped in, since their 2022 announcement, Bautista has been eager to join the cast.

In fact, while promoting another film, In the Lost Lands, Dave Bautista even spoke with ComicBook and told Netflix to move faster with the project. Plus, he also asked fans to help him by creating online buzz. Claiming how he has been repeatedly “badgering” Netflix behind the scenes, Bautista now wants fans to join in.

Start an online thing about freaking Gears of War. Come on, Netflix. Come on already. It’s not like I’m not badgering them. Come on, Netflix. Get it together.

Although there has been no solid progress made, regarding the Gears of War movie, it seems Dave Bautista might actually fit the role. Following the Afterburn trailer, where he carried himself like a hardened fighter, it seems that he will do justice to Marcus Fenix, the iconic hero from Gears of War.

After all, both characters carry the same rugged, battle-scarred persona, and even seem to have the same armor-like gear, and close-combat fighting style. Even the tone of the two films, the dark, gritty, post-apocalyptic world, seems to be very similar. Therefore, if Bautista can handle this film, he will surely deliver the same thrill in Gears of War.
