A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms Creator Reveals Why It Won’t Have Game of Thrones Opening Theme

A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms creator revealed the sad news that the upcoming show will not have Game of Thrones‘ opening theme. The famous piece, composed by Ramin Djawadi, has become a symbol for the Game of Thrones franchise.

However, in an interview with Entertainment Weekly, creator Ira Parker revealed that the opening theme used in George R.R. Martin’s Game of Thrones and House of the Dragon is grand and epic in its theme, something that is simply not the case with her show.

The title sequences on the original [Game of Thrones] and House of Dragon are big and epic and incredible. Ramin Djawadi’s score is orchestral and large and beautiful.

She continued,

That’s not really Dunk’s M.O. He’s plain and he’s simple and he’s to-the-point. He doesn’t have a lot of flash to him.

Well, as per Ira Parker, Dunk (known as Ser Duncan the Tall) is not flashy. Being a humble squire who knights himself following his liege’s death, Dunk travels the Seven Kingdoms without owing allegiance to anyone, or as Ira Parker puts it, “basically 14th-century Britain.”

A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms Showrunner Details Her 14th-Century Britain Inspiration

On a similar note, Ira Parker further explained that A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms will be quite different from Game of Thrones and House of the Dragon, not just in terms of the title sequence, but also in terms of grandeur and scope.

Based on the novellas Tales of Dunk and Egg, the upcoming show will cover the events of Ser Duncan the Tall meeting Egg (who is secretly Prince Aegon Targaryen), and together, they travel the Seven Kingdoms for money, fame, and glory.

Nobody’s thinking about magic. This could basically be 14th-century Britain. This is hard-nose, grind-it-out, gritty, medieval knights, cold with a really light, hopeful touch.

She continued,

It’s a wonderful place to be. We are ground up in this series, we are starting right at the bottom. We’re not with the lords and ladies, the kings and queens.

Considering the choice to start right at the bottom instead of with the petty politics of kings and queens, Ira Parker will actually help broaden the Game of Thrones franchise.

How the Game of Thrones Franchise is Expanding Beyond Dragons and White Walkers

We were introduced to a world where Dragons used to live and returned thanks to Daenerys Targaryen (and Ilyrio Mopatis for gifting her the Dragon Eggs). Of course, the threat of the White Walkers loomed from the opening scene of Game of Thrones and continued till season 8.

In House of the Dragon, we see the Targaryen Civil War with Dragons killing dragons and their riders. Naturally, the Targaryen civil war ended with all the Targaryens almost killing every member of their family, and also the death of all the Dragons.

However, with A Knight of Seven Kingdoms, the franchise is taking the next step and making the story grounded in reality. With no dragons and no magic, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms could be about a real-historical knight if Westeros existed.

The point being, with the fame and love that the Game of Thrones franchise has received, the creators are ready to take the next step and tell the important tales from the novels that shaped the world that we fell in love with.

The only question that remains is can A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms can beat the other two iconic HBO shows? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.

Game of Thrones and House of the Dragon are available to stream on HBO Max (USA).
