By George Wilson 10/15/2025

Controversial filmmaker Woody Allen‘s reputation took a grave hit after the s-x abuse allegations from his stepdaughter, Dylan Farrow, against him. While most artists distanced themselves from Allen, the late Diane Keaton continued to speak in his support (via The Guardian), despite the gravity of the accusations that resurfaced during the #MeToo movement.

Although Keaton didn’t directly address Farrow’s claim against Allen, she continued to speak in support of the controversial director, even admitting that the allegations don’t take away from their works together.

Diane Keaton Believed Woody Allen Despite Stern Allegations

While the charges against Allen were dropped in the ’90s, in the early 2010s, Farrow renewed allegations against Allen, and in her hefty editorial for the NYT, she called out Keaton, alongside Cate Blanchett and Scarlett Johansson, “You knew me when I was a little girl, Diane Keaton”.

Keaton, addressing these claims, shared that she didn’t know her, adding that she had only met Farrow three times. However, The Godfather

star acknowledged that it wasn’t a bad accusation, and even clarified that she doesn’t hold any resentments against Farrow over it. Although she didn’t outright touch on the specifics of the accusations, Keaton did say:

Not really. That I didn’t know her? I saw her maybe three times. I didn’t know her. It’s not a bad accusation. I was never friends with Mia – I was friendly. Sort of like I’m friendly with you. I like you, I like the way you are… I have nothing to say about that. Except: I believe my friend.

It’s important to note that Allen continued to deny the allegations, but this didn’t stop major stars, including Timothée Chalamet, from expressing public disdain about their collaborations with Allen.

Diane Keaton Stood By Her Work With Woody Allen

Unlike Chalamet, Keaton continued to stand by her movies with Allen, which launched her into stardom. From Sleeper, Manhattan, to Annie Hall, which earned Keaton an Oscar win, Keaton’s collaborations with Allen remain a cornerstone in the former’s revered career.

When asked whether the allegations undermined her work with the controversial director, Keaton noted that she retained pride in their body of work (via The Independent).

No, not at all. No. I’m proud. I’m proud beyond measure.

Following her passing, Allen posted a tribute for the actor, stressing that the world is now a drearier place without The Godfather star (via The Free Press).

A few days ago the world was a place that included Diane Keaton. Now it’s a world that does not. Hence, it’s a drearier world. Still, there are her movies. And her great laugh still echoes in my head.

Keaton’s friendship with Allen continues to be embroiled in controversies, leaving fans of her acclaimed filmography conflicted over the former’s association with the director.
