Diane Keaton on Her Nude Scene in 20th Century Fox’s Snubbed Unstreamable Gem: “With deviant..”

By Mark Davis 10/14/2025

Diane Keaton once reflected on her famous nude scene in Something’s Gotta Give (2003), a movie that 20th Century Fox snubbed, offering a candid take on aging and intimacy in Hollywood. Speaking about her portrayal of Erica Barry, a woman who navigates love and intimacy in her 50s, Keaton addressed her decision to go nude for the movie. The actress said (via The Guardian),

At this point, does it really matter? Nobody is looking at me the way I once imagined people would look at me, like with deviant thoughts. I think they just go, ‘Huh. There it is. Intact.’

In the movie, she gets into a romantic relationship with a much older womanizer named Harry Sanborn, played by Jack Nicholson. But what took the cake was the most talked-about nude scenes in Keaton’s career. Yet, Ke aton has always been candid about her approach to nudity, not as an objectification of the body. In fact, she humorously compares the nudity in the movie to that of her co-star, Nicholson. She said (via The Sydney Morning Herald),

If Jack’s running around with his butt hanging out in a hospital gown, then I’ve got to be this naked fifty-something woman, you know? Jack makes a fool out of himself; why shouldn’t I?

The legendary actor, Keaton, passed away this Saturday, on October 11, 2025, at the age of 79. She leaves behind a legacy of her groundbreaking roles, especially empowering women in romantic comedies.

Diane Keaton’s Something’s Gotta Give Is Re-releasing in Theatres

AMC Theatres is re-releasing Diane Keaton’s Something’s Gotta Give in 100 cinemas nationwide as part of a tribute to the late actress (via Variety). Directed by Nancy Meyers, it also features Keanu Reeves. In the movie, Nicholson’s Harry Sanborn, who only dates women under 30, falls for her girlfriend’s mother, Erica Barry, played by Keaton. Reeve’s character, a much younger doctor, also develops a relationship with Erica.

The 2003 rom-com became a massive box office hit. It grossed over $265 million globally (BoxOfficeMojo), making it one of the highest-grossing movies of the year. The movie received critical acclaim, with 72% Rotten Tomatoes score. Keaton earned a Golden Globe Award and her fourth Academy Award nomination for this role.

Alongside Something’s Gotta Give, AMC will also re-release Annie Hall (1977), which earned her an Academy Award for Best Actress. Starring alongside Woody Allen, Annie Hall remains a classic of American cinema and is regarded as one of Keaton’s best performances of her career.

Amada Peet’s Daughters Didn’t Approve of Her Role in Something’s Gotta Give

In another movie story, actress Amanda Peet shared a funny experience about her daughters’ reaction to Something’s Gotta Give. In a 2025 The View interview, Peet revealed that she tried to show her teenage daughters the movie, since it was a romantic comedy with no nude scenes of her. However, her daughters quickly turned the movie off (via EW). Peet said,

They saw the first five minutes, when I’m coupled with Jack Nicholson, and they were like, ‘This is so inappropriate and unethical. Do you know anything about third-wave feminism? Why did you take this part?’ So they turned it off.

While her daughters might have been a bit critical of the movie, Peet expressed nothing but admiration for her co-star Diane Keaton, calling her an “idol.”

Just like that, Diane Keaton’s legacy will continue to resonate through her performances in movies like Something’s Gotta Give and Annie Hall. As these movies return to theaters, it’s a great time to revisit them. Are you watching any of them? Share your thoughts and your favorite moments from the movies.
