“Frankly, Iron Man is better”: Why Quentin Tarantino Hates One Paul Newman Movie That Almost Won The Oscar

By George Johnson 10/09/2025

Despite not being an avid fan of Marvel movies or superhero movies in general, Quentin Tarantino thinks that superhero movies are just disaster movies waiting to happen.

However, despite a love of cinema (specifically the ’70s and the ’80s), Tarantino famously crowned an iconic Paul Newman movie as one of the worst films that he had ever seen. Speaking with Bret Easton Ellis (via FarOut Magazine), the director revealed that even Iron Man was better.

You could take the entire argument about superhero movies and make it about disaster movies. Frankly, Iron Man is better than Airport ’75 or The Towering Inferno, which I watched again recently.

The director continued,

It’s shocking how awful that movie is. And it got nominated for ‘Best Picture’!

Tarantino is indeed right about that fact since The Towering Inferno, which followed the premise of an architect saving people from a building that he had designed, was indeed nominated for ‘Best Picture’ in 1975.

Although Francis Ford Coppola’s The Godfather Part II took the honor of being the ‘Best Picture’ in 1975, it’s still a wonder for Tarantino about how The Towering Inferno

got nominated.

Key Facts About The Towering Inferno:

What Quentin Tarantino Has to Say About Superhero Movies

Well, directing a total of 9 movies about revenge, money, heists, vengeance, and Hollywood, Quentin Tarantino has never set foot in superhero movies (although Uma Thurman’s killing spree in Kill Bill was no less than an Avengers movie).

Despite the cinematography and the skills that he uses in his movies, Tarantino despises superhero flicks, and he is not happy with the “Marvel-ization of Hollywood,” as he said on the “2 Bears, 1 Cave” podcast.

Part of the Marvel-ization of Hollywood is…you have all these actors who have become famous playing these characters. But they’re not movie stars. Right? Captain America is the star. Or Thor is the star.

He continued,

I’m not the first person to say that. I think that’s been said a zillion times…but it’s like, you know, it’s these franchise characters that become a star.

Well, it’s like saying that Quentin Tarantino’s characters have become more famous than the actors portraying them. Oh, wait… That is the case since people remember Hans Landa more and not Christoph Waltz as much.

However, the director is telling the truth in terms of how superhero movies have become the go-to factor for theatrical experiences.

Quentin Tarantino is One of the Few Directors Fighting the Superhero War

Not to say that there aren’t other directors who are keeping the trend alive; however, Quentin Tarantino (alongside Martin Scorsese and others) is one of the few directors who is trying to keep the ’70s and the ’80s alive through his films.

From his films like Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood (which is a love letter to cinema) to quirky flicks like Inglourious Basterds, there is no surety in a Tarantino film, something that has become a bit rare these days.

Most superhero flicks have somewhat similar and predictable storylines, while the others have been rebooted countless times. Naturally, Tarantino provides a fresh perspective to the world of cinema and Hollywood, and is one of the few directors who hasn’t bowed to the fantasy heroes of Hollywood.
