Kevin Costner’s Yellowstone Exit: 70-Year-Old “Lunged” at Co-Star for Being Loyal to Taylor Sheridan

By Brian Lopez 10/08/2025

Kevin Costner’s dramatic exit from Yellowstone keeps stirring the headlines with new details. In a recent shocking revelation, an insider revealed to The Hollywood Reporter that Costner “lunged” at his co-star, Wes Bentley, after he refused to act out the scene against Taylor Sheridan’s direction.

Kevin didn’t like that, and he lunged at him. No fists were thrown, but they were in each other’s faces, pushing and shoving and just getting hot until they had to be separated.

During the incident, their co-star Kelly Reilly was in tears, and the whole fiasco briefly shut down production. Turns out, the clash wasn’t just about one scene but a breaking point of their escalating tensions due to creative differences.

Here’s an overview of Yellowstone:

So, let’s look at how Costner has almost destroyed his credibility in the industry, and what he said about Taylor Sheridan’s show after taking the exit.

How Yellowstone’s Kevin Costner Ruined His Reputation in Hollywood

When Wes Bentley dared to remind Kevin Costner that “he had signed up for a Taylor Sheridan show, not a Kevin Costner production,”

the senior actor lost his cool. But this isn’t the first time he’s found himself in the middle of controversy, because throughout Costner’s career, he’s held a reputation for being difficult to work with (via THR).

He’s fought with co-stars, directors, and even dismissed sound advice from revered creatives like Steven Spielberg. Moreover, he clashed with Clint Eastwood, Kurt Russell, and sued his longtime producing partner Jim Wilson for $15 million.

He’s had arbitrations scheduled with production companies and has been facing a lawsuit from a stunt performer. These recent claims of the alleged Yellowstone incident have brought back his controversial past, and it’s not looking too good for the actor.

What Kevin Costner Has Said About Taylor Sheridan After Yellowstone Exit

In a May 2024 interview with Deadline, Kevin Costner spoke about his exit from Taylor Sheridan’s Yellowstone. When asked if the actor was prioritizing his passion project over his role as John Dutton in the hit Western show, he said:

I made a contract for seasons five, six and seven. In February, after a two- or three-month negotiation, they made another contract. They wanted to redo that one, and instead of seasons six and seven, it was 5A and 5B, and maybe we’ll do six. They weren’t able to make those. Horizon was set in the middle, but Yellowstone was first position. I fit [Horizon] into the gaps. They just kept moving their gaps.

Costner further claimed that the narrative of him only limiting himself to one week of work is false, and explained that he tried to help the production by offering a week, but his gesture was misrepresented as an ultimatum or refusal to work. According to the actor, the production delays weren’t his fault.

So, Costner did come off as level-headed in this interview, but what are your thoughts on the recent revelation of him getting almost into a fight with a co-star?

Yellowstone is currently streaming on Paramount+ (USA).
