Clue Gets a Sinister Makeover As Netflix Turns It Into a Live-Action Mind Trap

By William Taylor 10/07/2025

Netflix is currently working to bring a competition series based on the widely famous murder mystery board game and movie, Clue. Produced by Hasbro Entertainment, The Intellectual Property Corporation (IPC), and B17 Entertainment, it is being reimagined as an unscripted Netflix competition series.

During its announcement, Jeff Gaspin, the VP of unscripted series at Netflix, remarked (via Variety):

Like so many families and friends over the years, we’ve gathered around the table trying to figure out who did it — making ‘Clue’ a source of nostalgia that everyone shares. Thanks to the incredible vision of our partners at Hasbro Entertainment, IPC, and B17, we’re delivering a fresh, imaginative whodunit competition that will invite today’s audiences into that iconic world.

The announcement comes after Sony Pictures recently landed the rights to Clue last year, given that it owns IPC and B17. The board game has sold more than 150M copies since it was launched in 1949.

What Will Netflix’s Version of Clue Be About

As Deadline reports, the live-action unscripted series will adapt Clue as a competition series. It will reportedly feature a group of contestants who will be facing several physical and mental challenges before stepping into a real-life game filled with deduction and deception.

They will have to use their wits and brains to get ahead of their opponents and identify who, where, and with what of the crime in order to win. If they end up guessing right, the money will land in the prize pot, and if they guess wrong, they will get eliminated.

Moreover, all the contestants will be surrounded by suspects such as Colonel Mustard, Miss Scarlett, Professor Plum, and Mrs. White.

While Netflix’s Clue is one of the most recent attempts in adapting the game, there have been several attempts in the past: In 1985 it was turned into a black comedy directed by Jonathan Lynn, a short-lived TV series in 2011, in 2011 Universal Studios was planning to make a new movie, a Fox attempted to make a version in 2016, and the last attempt was in 2020 when Jase Bobin was hired to write.

As of now, Netflix has not revealed any release date, cast details, or trailer release.

Clue Is Not the Only Series Based on Games on Netflix

Netflix has increasingly mined games for series and movies. Clue fits this trend. The streamer has already adapted games like Exploding Kittens into an animated series based on the popular card game of the same name.

Netflix has also been working with Hasbro Entertainment to develop series based on Dungeons & Dragons, a film and TV universe based on Magic: The Gathering. Moreover, the company already has a Monopoly game show set up at Netflix, along with Studio Lambert, Wheelhouse, and Endemol Shine North America, seeking rights to produce it as a bake-off.

Also, Netflix has been working with board game companies to turn shows into physical games (e.g., Squid Game, Ozark, Stranger Things), suggesting a cross-media strategy where intellectual property is used both for streaming content and game products (via BGR).

Given this trend, Clue’s live-action remake could either become a standout example of how to successfully adapt a game into a mature narrative or a cautionary tale if it loses the charm that made Clue beloved. Well, what do you think? Let us know in the comments below.
