Jennifer Lopez‘s Kiss of the Spider Woman has opened to rave reviews and currently holds a strong 82% on the Tomatometer from 50 reviews. The movie revolves around Diego Luna‘s Valentine and Tonatiuh’s Molina, who are forced to share a cell in prison. They eventually form a bond after the latter recounts the plot of a Hollywood musical, featuring his favourite star, Ingrid Luna (played by Lopez), aka the Spider Woman.
The movie, based on the stage musical of the same name, is directed by Bill Condon, who is notable for Dreamgirls. Considering Lopez has had some less-than-thrilling feature releases in the last few years, the upcoming musical, along with her last movie, signals a positive sign in her career.
Kiss of the Spider Woman Continues Jennifer Lopez’s Bounce Back After Misfires
After returning to the big screen with Marry Me
But following the success of Unstoppable, which opened to fresh ratings on the Tomatometer, the upcoming musical suggests a fresh direction for Lopez’s movie career. While the scores are subject to change as more reviews will start to pour in, it’ll also be interesting to see if fans’ viewpoints will align with critics.
Even though the scores do fluctuate, it’s safe to say the movie will conclude its run with a fresh rating, which is by no means underwhelming.
Ben Affleck Helped Get Kiss of the Spider Woman Made
Ben Affleck, despite parting ways with Lopez for the second time, serves as the executive producer on the musical. Although their marriage experienced major public scrutiny, the Atlas star remains grateful for Affleck’s contribution to the musical.
In an interview with Today, she expressed that the movie wouldn’t have seen the light of day if it weren’t for the Justice League star. Speaking of the movie, Lopez shared that it helped the actor get through a tumultuous period in her life, potentially suggesting her split from Affleck.
But, it’s funny. The movie is about escapism. It’s about how movies and art save us in the hardest times of our lives. And doing this project was such a dream come true for me that it really got me through, to kind of survive a moment that was difficult in my personal life, as well.
With the movie just right around the corner, Lionsgate, Roadside Attractions, and LD Entertainment will handle its distribution across the United States.
