“Maybe it’s too late”: Cillian Murphy Hints MCU Future After Steve Release on Netflix

By Charles Martinez 10/03/2025

Cillian Murphy has weighed in on potential big-studio projects amid the release of Steve (via Variety), starring him in the shoes of a head teacher of Stanton Wood, a school comprising troubled youth. When asked if he was in demand to lead a big studio project in the wake of Oppenheimer’s success, the actor confessed that he hasn’t been available since nabbing an Oscar for the biopic.

No, because I had these other two films straight away. I just wasn’t available, so it didn’t happen. Maybe some day it will. Or maybe it’s too late.

With The Bone Temple reportedly marking his return to big studio productions, the actor’s openness toward major mainstream projects could pave the way for a potential MCU collaboration in the future.

What Cillian Murphy’s Comments Could Mean for a Potential MCU Collab?

Before his Oppenheimer costar RDJ was announced as Doom for the upcoming multiversal battle in Doomsday and Secret Wars, the Oscar winner was a popular pick for the role among fans. While this never came to fruition, Murphy’s renewed interest in stepping into mainstream productions could open the gate for an MCU casting.

Considering the MCU is no stranger to nabbing major talents, with a possible reset on the horizon, he can very much become a leading man in the next chapter of the cinematic giant.

But given the commitment that comes with an MCU role, especially for a major stint, it’ll be interesting to see if he would be open to hopping on for a long haul, perhaps even stepping in as a new Doom after Secret Wars. Hopefully, MCU won’t waste him like they did Christian Bale in Love & Thunder if the Oscar winner does opt to join the cinematic giant.

Cillian Murphy’s Steve is a Love Letter to Teachers

Coming back to Murphy’s recent release, his second movie post-Oppenheimer and his second collaboration with director Tim Mielants, Small Things Like These, Steve was a very personal project for the actor.

Having been raised by parents who were teachers, Murphy’s Steve works as a love letter to the profession.

Like his Oppenheimer costar Matt Damon, who also took a stance for teachers in the past, Murphy recognized the hardships of educators, which he didn’t fully appreciate as a kid (via Decider).

You live that life vicariously. I don’t think I fully appreciated it, when I was young, how hard it was—both of them working and both of them coming home to us. Dealing with their own kids after standing up in front of 35 other kids.

As for his next projects, apart from The Bone Temple, Murphy will also lead The Immortal Man, the final chapter in Thomas Shelby’s story. Given how meticulous the actor has been with his works, it’s safe to say whatever major productions he jumps on next won’t disappoint.
