A new trailer for Avatar: Fire and Ash has arrived, and amid the breathtaking visuals, one of the surprising elements involves Jack Champion’s Spider, the biological son of Miles Quaritch, later adopted by Jake Sully and Neytiri. While most of us were under the impression that no human can survive on Pandora without the mask, the trailer flips the script with Spider breathing unmasked.
The trailer even takes the moment to point out the significance of Spider’s evolution, with Jake Sully expressing concern about its potential impact on the Na’vi as a whole, especially in light of the humans’ plans to colonize Pandora.
Spider’s Evolution Could Open a Whole New Pandora’s Box in Avatar 3
In addition to being able to breathe in Pandora’s atmosphere, one clip even sees Spider bonding with the planet’s fauna through tsaheylu, something that has been exclusive to the Na’vi people in the last two movies.
Although fans will have to wait until the movie premieres to get the answers, it could hint at Pandora accepting Spider. And like Sully said, it could be detrimental to the Na’vi, as it opens the floodgate for other humans being able to breathe without any issue in Pandora.
It remains to be seen whether this will remain exclusive to Spider or serve as a major plot point for the conflict between humans and Na’vi in the movie or in the potential sequels, which James Cameron intends to direct. But one thing is clear: Spider will be more prominent in the threequel, not only because of his newfound ability but also because of his bond with the main antagonist.
Avatar: Fire and Ash Will Deep Dive into Spider and Quaritch’s Complicated Bond
In The Way of Water, Spider and Stephen Lang’s Quaritch, despite being on opposite sides of the conflict, developed a mutual understanding, and the movie even concluded with Spider saving Quaritch.
While the trailer sees Spider back with the Sully family, according to Lang, the duo will reconnect out of necessity in the sequel. He further added that their bond will deepen, given Quaritch’s growing admiration for his son; however, the road won’t be smooth sailing (via Empire).
Their connection is not a solo connection. There are times when everybody comes together on some level. But, when enemies cooperate, you can be sure betrayal is just around the corner. Spider confuses Quaritch. But Quaritch wants clarity. There is something about Spider that Quaritch really loves — not a word we associate with him. I think respect and admiration really develop in spades, as well as animosity and manipulation. The relationship will deepen — for better or worse.
It’ll be interesting to see how Spider would react in the wake of a deepened bond with Quaritch when the push eventually comes to shove, not to mention that Neytiri pulled a knife on him in the predecessor. Whatever happens, it’s evident that Spider will have some tough choices in front of him.
