Wicked: For Good has released its final trailer, and it is already promising a fitting finale for an epic story. Starring Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo, the second part of the fantasy musical will find its way back to the profound friendship between Glinda and Elphaba that set the tone of the 2024 movie.
Now exiled, feared, and hated, the Wicked Witch of the West leans into her demonized identity, with the final trailer reminding us that no good deed goes unpunished. But it also proves that every cloud has a silver lining when she reunites with Glinda to transform her reputation and all of Oz… for good.
But no conclusion is ever complete without a little pathos, conflict, and duel in the mix. The sequel examines political themes like the Wizard’s escalating tyranny and propaganda against the Wicked Witch, a moral dilemma underlining the fight between good and evil, and an epic duel between Glinda and Elphaba before restoring hope through the power of love and friendship.
Wicked: For Good Recreates the Magic of Its Oscar-Winning Prequel
In 2024, the live-action feature adaptation of the famous tale of Oz took the world by storm. Here, instead of Dorothy, the yellow brick road, the Wizard, and Emerald City, John M. Chu’s story transported the audience to a magical world to reexamine the past and redefine the notions of good, evil, fate, and destiny.
Wicked swept the floor at the 97th Academy Awards, earning 10 Oscar nominations (including Best Picture) and winning 2. Now, the second half of the two-part musical is ready to deliver another hearty dose of poignant and wholesome goodness through Wicked: For Good, as a film sequel finally gets the formula right for once – by recreating the magic and tone of the original.
Despite upping the ante in the high-stakes finale, Wicked: For Good never forgets the emotional core of the narrative that is embedded in the tragic love story between Ariana Grande’s Glinda and Cynthia Erivo’s Elphaba. Although the two witches battle and duel for a greater cause, they also find their way back to each other despite incredible odds stacked desperately against them.
Wicked: For Good will also add an element of nostalgia to its epic tale by fully fleshing out the arc of Dorothy from Kansas and introducing other familiar characters like the Tin Man, Scarecrow, and the Cowardly Lion.
Wicked: For Good: When Will It Arrive on Streaming?
The 2024 movie proved to be an epic theatrical feat, with the film arriving on November 22, launching alongside Ridley Scott‘s ensemble epic, Gladiator II. Yet, Wicked topped the box office ahead of Gladiator II, earning a worldwide total of $756.4 million and becoming the fifth-most profitable film of 2024 [Box Office Mojo].
As is the case with any good theatrical run under Universal Pictures, Wicked enjoyed a full month in theaters before being made available on VOD on December 21, 2024, right on time for the holiday season. On 4 February 2025, the film was released on Blu-ray and DVD, followed by its launch on NBC Universal-owned streaming platform Peacock on March 21, 2025.
If a similar timeline is followed for the sequel, Wicked: For Good will also be available to rent and/or buy on premium video on demand platforms like Amazon Prime Video, Apple TV, and Fandango At Home after a theatrical run lasting 30-45 days. Given its 21st November release, it will again launch on VOD by Christmas Eve, and can be streamed on Peacock by March 21, 2026.
