Jared Leto’s string of failures continues with the recent release of Tron: Ares. With a low box office collection, Tron: Ares had an even lower debut collection than his infamous 2022 flick, Morbius.
With reports that Jared Leto might not be considered to lead a franchise anymore, it seems that the actor hasn’t had a successful career in quite a while.
With the actor having starred in a plethora of films, several franchises have suffered greatly, too. Although it might not always be Jared Leto’s fault, we can’t help but notice a certain pattern.
Well, here are 4 franchises that were killed following Leto’s involvement.
4. Blade Runner
The first film, Blade Runner, was released in 1982 and starred Harrison Ford in the lead role. Director Denis Villeneuve continued the legacy with his 2017 movie, Blade Runner 2049.
The 2017 film starred Jared Leto in the role of Niander Wallace. The CEO of Wallace Corporation, Leto, appeared in Blade Runner 2049 and the short film 2036: Nexus Dawn.
While there were discussions of a sequel to Blade Runner 2049, it was eventually shelved, and the franchise decided to continue with a television show instead. Jared Leto is not confirmed to reprise his role.
3. DCEU
Although the eventual firing of Zack Snyder and the closure of the DCEU wasn’t entirely Jared Leto’s fault, the actor was indeed a part of the 2016 film, Suicide Squad.
Starring alongside Margot Robbie in several scenes, Leto portrayed the role of Joker (following Heath Ledger’s majestic performance in The Dark Knight). Naturally, fans revolted at his performance.
Although David Ayer stepped in and stated that he wasn’t allowed to release his version of the film (the Ayer Cut), the DCEU was eventually closed.
2. Sony’s Spider-Man Films
Well, this one seems a bit dicey, and it might look like Jared Leto had a larger role to play in the franchise’s closure than it seems. Sony was happy with Tobey Maguire’s Spider-Man films. Soon, they ventured into other films like the Venom franchise with Tom Hardy in 2018.
However, in 2022, Sony produced and released Morbius, starring Jared Leto in the leading role. The film was a massive failure as Leto’s acting (as well as the movie) was ridiculed. Although Sony continued making several movies, the finale of Sony’s superhero flicks came with the release of Venom: The Last Dance.
P.S.: For those of you seeking relevance, Morbius was originally introduced as a Spider-Man villain in The Amazing Spider-Man #101 (1971). So, technically, Morbius‘ failure could be attributed to the closure of Sony’s films.
1. Tron
Last but not least, the most infamous of Jared Leto’s failures is Tron: Ares. Starring Leto in the lead role of Ares, the recently released flick became the actor’s worst failure (even having a lower opening than Morbius).
The box office results of Tron: Ares have also made the insiders believe that Jared Leto might not officially be able to carry a franchise movie anymore. Of course, the IP was already a bit tough to handle, but it seems that Jared Leto’s career has been going on a downward path for quite a long time now.
The Tron franchise might just be dead with the failure of Tron: Ares, and it is yet another franchise that closed following Jared Leto’s involvement in it (hey, we are not the ones saying it).
